Lazy, Fat Parents Raise Lazy, Fat Children
It’s note really a great revelation to learn that over 80% of overweight children have at least one overweight parent or carer. And it’s not a great surprise that over 50% of children who are overweight go on to become overweight adults.
The really sad fact is that being overweight raises the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes and can seriously reduce life expectancy. But what can be done? If there was a pill that we could all take or a gizmo that we could plug in and turn on that would keep us fit and healthy that would be wonderful.
But unfortunately there is no magic cure for what some are describing as the biggest crime of the 21st century. However, there are things that can be done.
It starts with being completely honest with yourself regarding what you eat and the amount of exercise you get every day. There is no point in telling your children that they need to get more exercise if you can’t be bothered yourself. It’s all about finding things that you enjoy doing. Maybe walking in the country, gardening or playing soccer.
If you can identify games and activities that you can play with your children that would be fantastic. For me the change came when I bought a fancy play system for the back garden. I thought I’d done my bit by splashing out on the climbing frame with a slide and swings, but my children weren’t playing with it. So I detached my expansive back side from the settee and ventured into the garden.
All I had to do was engage with my youngsters a little by pushing them on the swings and helping them climb the monkey ladder and they were suddenly filled with enthusiasm. A little positive encouragement from me and now they can’t wait to get out in the garden to play, with me in tow.
I thought I’d wasted my money on the expensive play equipment but it has become a huge benefit to both my children and myself. I’ve lost a few pounds over the past month and my children are having lots of fun. What’s more, I think I am getting to know them a whole lot better than I did before.
It all comes down to making a little effort for some massive benefits.
